Content Teaching Academy (CTA)

June 27, 2022 - June 30, 2022

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will sponsor several content teaching academies on June 27-30, 2022, at James Madison University. The academies are designed to enhance outcomes of students with disabilities and to promote inclusive practices.

Each academy can accommodate 100 participants, and the target audience is specific to each
academy’s focus. Due to space limitations, participants should only register for one academy.
Priority will be given to divisions and regions that have demonstrated limited participation in
previous Content Teaching Academies, and to educators from schools in divisions that are
working with the Office of Special Education Program Improvement and/or the Office of
School Quality.

Academy Descriptions:

Adapted Physical Education and Family Life Education (APE/FLE)

JUNE 27 – 30, 2022

The Adapted Physical Education and Family Life Education (APE/FLE) program is a four-day academy designed for physical education and special education teachers to enhance their understanding of the revised Physical Education Standards of Learning and develop effective inclusion strategies that allow all students to be successful, including those with disability. The APE/FLE Academy will be held June 27 – 30. Check-in will take place on June 26.

Co-Teaching Elementary Math/Reading (K-5) (CTERM)

JUNE 27 – 28, 2022

The Co-Teaching Elementary Reading/Math (K-5) (CTERM) academy is a two-day academy designed for elementary school general and special education teacher co-teaching teams who work together during math and reading to enhance student outcomes by improving content understanding, pedagogical strategies for math and reading, collaboration/co-teaching strategies, and networking. The CTERM Academy will be held June 27 -28. Check-in will take place on June 26.

Best Practices in Inclusion Education (BPI)

JUNE 27 – 28, 2022

The Best Practices in Inclusion Education (BPI) academy is a two-day academy designed to help instructional teams from targeted schools to improve and enhance the performance of students with disabilities in more inclusive school settings The BPI Academy will be held June 27 -28. Check-in will take place on June 26.

Instructional Practices for Teachers of Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (IPT)

JUNE 27 – 28, 2022

The Best Practices in Inclusion Education (BPI) academy is a two-day academy designed for teachers teaching in an adapted curriculum to students with cognitive disabilities. It will provide teachers with strategies and instructional resources to support their instruction using the Virginia Essentialized Standards of Learning (VESOL). The IPT Academy will be held June 27 -28. Check-in will take place on June 26.

Augmenting Mathematics and Special Educator Teams (AMSET)

JUNE 29 – 30, 2022

The Augmenting Mathematics and Special Educator Teams (AMSET) program is a two-day academy designed for mathematics and special educator school teams working together to enhance student outcomes focusing on improved content understanding, pedagogical strategies, collaboration strategies, and networking. The AMSET Academy will be held June 29 -30. Check-in will take place on June 28.

Co-Teaching in Secondary School English (CoENG)

JUNE 29 – 30, 2022

The Co-Teaching in Secondary School English (CoENG) academy is a two-day academy designed for high school English and special education teacher co-teaching teams who work together during instruction to enhance student outcomes by improving content understanding, pedagogical strategies for teaching and learning in English, collaboration/co-teaching strategies, and networking. The CoENG Academy will be held June 29 -30. Check-in will take place on June 28.
