Narrative Language Resources for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)

Story Champs

The Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Instructional Services is offering a professional development series for prekindergarten (pre-k) through fifth grade speech-language pathologists (SLPs) focusing on narrative language to support students with language development, comprehension, and writing.

This program will provide SLPs with live online training September 15, 2021, and a Story Champs kit that may be used in the therapy room and the classroom setting. SLPs will learn how to focus on both macrostructure and microstructure using narrative retells and support classroom teachers.

SLPs serving students in grades pre-k through fifth grade may apply for this opportunity by first watching a short introduction video about Story Champs and the small group demonstration video. SLPs who wish to be considered must complete the online application and participate in the September 15, 2021, professional development session from 1 – 4 p.m. Space is limited, and will be allocated across Virginia school divisions.

Questions about this program may be directed to Marie Ireland, Speech Language Impairment, Eligibility and Related Services Specialist, at Marie.Ireland@doe.virginia.gov.
