Unlocking Big Words: Strategies for Decoding Multisyllabic Words Training
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Department of Special Education and Student Services is seeking 75 general education and special education teachers, grades 4-12, to participate in Unlocking Big Words: Strategies for Decoding Multisyllabic Words Training. This virtual professional development opportunity is designed to address the needs of older students who struggle with decoding and determining the meaning of multisyllabic words. Sessions will be facilitated by VDOE and Training and Technical Assistance Centers staff members with practicing professionals in the field.
Teachers interested must register by June 16, 2023, for one of the training sessions listed below. Those who have attended a structured literacy professional development course, such as the Institute of Multisensory Education’s Comprehensive Training or the VDOE’s Multisensory Structured Literacy Instruction training, are not appropriate candidates for this opportunity.
Attendance is mandatory for the entire two-day training to receive a certificate of completion. Selected participants will receive instruction on how to use the principles of syllabication to build fluency and comprehension in their struggling readers including those with specific learning disabilities. Participants will be provided instructional materials and an opportunity to attend a follow-up Community of Practice event.
